Defensible Space & Green Waste

Defensible Space Information

Defensible space, coupled with home hardening, is essential to improve your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire. Defensible space is the buffer you create between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any wildland area that surround it. This space is needed to slow or stop the spread of wildfire and it helps protect your home from catching fire—either from embers, direct flame contact or radiant heat. Proper defensible space also provides firefighters a safe area to work in, to defend your home.
  • Defensible Space Education - CAL FIRE's Ready for Wildfire website and Nevada County Fire Safe Council's website explain the different defensible space zones and requirements.
  • Defensible Space Inspections - Truckee Fire Protection District aims to perform defensible space inspections of every property in the district at least once every three years. Schedule a free defensible space inspection with Truckee Fire Protection District or access your inspection report here. It is beneficial to schedule an inspection to have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss your property findings with our Defensible Space Specialist. It also allows for more thorough recommendations.
  • Defensible Space Advisory Visit - This program by Nevada County Fire Safe Council is a one-on-one consultation at your home to provide you friendly, knowledgeable advice on what you can do to reduce the threat of losing your home in a wildfire.
  • Defensible space contractors serving the area are included in the Resources section below.
